What is e.forensics

e.forensics, electronic evidence or computer forensics involves investigating either; a computer, network server, mobile phone, PDA, portable storage media, GPS unit, digital camera or the internet.

e.forensic investigations focus on finding digital evidence after a computer security incident has occurred, or locating data from systems that may form part of some electronic litigation, even if it is deleted.  The goal of e.forensics is to do a structured investigation to find out exactly what happened on the digital system and who was responsible for it, which is where we play our key role in providing electronic litigation support.

So much valuable evidence is stored on computers and on other electronic devices, but ensuring their integrity and admissibility is difficult without the support of an independent e.forensics expert. The evolution in computer technology progresses, computers and other communication systems are becoming very complex and better connected through all kinds of networks. At the same time, computer crime techniques are becoming more sophisticated and better coordinated.

Our e.forensics team can provide electronic litigation support through locating and recovering data from tapes and servers. Computer hard drives contain key information which is vital to electronic litigation. In some cases, significant information may be erased or deleted, forensic computer experts can now retrieve this information as well as determine informational pedigrees. In addition, tape conversion can be performed to extract information from legacy tape drives.

There are a number of phases for recovering evidence from a computer system or electronic storage medium and often the results of a forensic investigations are used in criminal proceedings.

Electronic litigation investigations requires our experts to follow a specific e.forensic process which is as follows;

  • identification
  • collection
  • preservation
  • analysis
  • expert witness presentation

If evidence collection is managed correctly, it is much more useful in apprehending the person in question and stands a much greater chance of being admissible in the event of a prosecution.
